Kale is in its Prime

Kale is an excellent fall and winter crop for calgary. In fact it gets much sweeter after a hard frost. I can’t wait. By mid fall it’s so much tastier and is great simply steamed with oil and water.

We have a lot packed into this little space. Very excited about the Minuet Napa. It makes the best Asian slaw salads.

Black Plastic

Black landscape plastic is a big time saver. In the past few years it’s becoming more and more common on small organic farms. It keeps weeds down, reduces soil moisture evaporatio, increase garden temperatures and and keeps produce cleaner. Plus it can last for many years.

You can buy it at Home Depot or The Professional Gardener in Ramsey.

Kale season is on!

This week we’ve been harvesting our first big bunches of kale. Anticipating a warm spring and knowing that kale can easily survive frosts, we started the seeds indoors in early March. The transplants were planted out in early April and given a bit of protection under low hoops.
